The ANTICIPATE consortium held its third progress meeting on 14 October in Brussels, also connecting virtually, where partners reviewed the results achieved so far and outlined the next steps towards transforming air traffic management (ATM) systems for greater efficiency and resilience across Europe.
The ANTICIPATE project is tackling the complexities of en-route air traffic management, which faces challenges such as rapidly changing traffic conditions, high-density flows, and unpredictable weather. To address these challenges, the project is working towards introducing capacity-on-demand mechanisms at the operational level. These mechanisms will enable more adaptive, real-time airspace capacity management to match traffic demand wherever and whenever needed.
Over the past several months, the project has made significant strides. Among the advancements, the team has begun designing cockpit indicators, developing a clusterisation algorithm to delegate air traffic control for a group of aircraft between adjacent sectors, and LTM and air traffic controller handover procedures to improve situational awareness and decision-making. These developments are supported by ongoing work on socio-technical models and capacity indicators to improve system predictability and resilience.
The project is now preparing for its next phase, which will test these technological innovations and procedural changes in realistic operational scenarios. The validation phase will be key in ensuring that these solutions can be integrated effectively into the SESAR framework for future deployment.
In addition to its technical progress, ANTICIPATE continues to expand its outreach and dissemination activities, strengthening its presence in the aviation research community.
The consortium is actively participating in major events like SESAR Innovation Days 2025 and the Transport Research Arena (TRA). Three scientific papers have been submitted for presentation, and more publications are expected in the coming months. To increase visibility and engagement, new communication materials—including a teaser video and project leaflets—are also being launched.
The consortium reaffirmed its commitment to close collaboration and timely delivery of project outputs. The next progress meeting will take place in March 2026 in Naples, while the Advisory Board will meet in December 2025 to discuss upcoming validation activities and ensure alignment with SESAR JU priorities.
