This article introduces a Horizon EUROPE SESAR Joint Undertaking project labelled AWARE. AWARE is a research project that builds and extends upon the results and knowledge gained from precursor research in the AISA (AI Situational Awareness Foundation for Advancing Automation) project. The research is concerned with supporting air traffic controllers in en-route air traffic control (ATC) operations through the active use of artificial intelligence (AI). As projects, they are exemplars of the digitisation of work and the viability of two dimensions of air traffic control officer (ATCO) work: • Supporting controllers’ situational awareness by distributing tasks to an AI agent • Human-AI teaming (HAIT), where the ATCO and the machine agent work in a cooperative or collaborative manner. The article discusses the requirement and functional needs of these, and presents views and opinions on the validity of the concept of operations and HAIT, based on a recent simulation experiment where the concept was tested with current air traffic controllers.
