Supplementing aviation-specific safety links with non-safety broadband communication links for extra capacity
Aviation-specific safety links are becoming increasingly congested, raising the need for additional links and upgraded networking technologies. Hyper connected ATM seeks to address this challenge by providing secured access to additional links while leveraging all existing radio communication infrastructure to enhance capacity.
The Solution aims to show the feasibility of using public/non-safety air-ground links in addition to aeronautical-specific/safety links, thereby bolstering the safety and regularity of flight communications.
Hyper connected ATM is leveraging commercial radio infrastructure already deployed for passengers' in-flight connectivity, for additional capacity and therefore mitigating congestion of the VHF Data Link (VDL) mode 2, the main link currently used for data communication exchanges between aircraft and ground-based systems.
Focused on integration within the current aircraft communication addressing and reporting system (ACARS) and aeronautical telecommunications network/open systems interconnection (ATN/OSI) environment, but accounting for parallel exploration in the aeronautical telecommunications network/internet protocol suite (ATN/IPS) realm, the solution includes validation exercises in a highly representative operational setting. In addition, this solution will provide inputs to standardisation and policy makers, based on the disruptive approach that public links “as they are” could play a role in the future infrastructure for supporting safety-related aeronautical communications.
BENEFITS
- Improved communication infrastructure with increased capacity to support current and future datalink application needs
- Improved communication infrastructure compliant with required safety, security and performance standards applicable to safety-related air-ground communications.
