ADS-C information provided by the equipped and logged on aircraft is provided to the controllers. The enhanced awareness of the trajectory predicted by the aircraft will support the controllers when giving the descent clearance, considering the flight’s intentions and limitations.

Depending on other traffic and workload the controllers will be able to allow the aircraft to fly a better profile from Top of Descent, resulting in an improved flight efficiency and reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The outcomes of a previous project, called PJ38-ADSCENSIO, showed that ADS-C had the potential for this improvement, but there was a need to consolidate these results by experimenting more situations involving ATS-B2 equipped aircraft, focusing on the end of cruise and descent phase tasks and on airspaces (flows, waypoints) where the need and possibility for improvements is identified.

When possible, it is also foreseen to combine relaxing a transfer altitude constraint between sectors and then using the TOD information to provide the clearance for the initial descent, to maximise the benefits by keeping the flight as long as possible at its highest cruise flight level.
