A wider and more systematic usage of single engine operations during airport surface operations with taxi-out and taxi-in phases being done through single engine taxiing used from the gate to the holding point before line up (i.e. for push-back and taxi-out) and from the runway exit to the gate (i.e. for taxi-in to in-block) would significantly contribute to a fuel consumption and emissions reduction.

Improved information sharing would encourage flight crew to apply single engine operations, in particular in taxi-out phase. Single engine taxiing involves using only half the number of engines installed to generate the energy needed for taxiing, reducing taxi fuel consumption which, in turn, translates into reductions in CO2/NOx emissions, while minimising engine use results in reduced noise. The solution includes guidelines provided by the airport and on-board tools.
