Advanced risk models enhance capacity, safety, and security for uncrewed aerial systems operations in U-space.

Current risk models, such as the specific operations risk assessment (SORA), are essential for aviation safety but have limitations in addressing the complexities of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) operating at very low levels (VLL) in urban areas. These limitations make it difficult to ensure both safety and regulatory compliance, slowing down the growth of UAS use in cities.

This solution provides enhanced risk models tailored to UAS in urban VLL environments. They account for risks such as mid-air collisions (UAS-to-UAS and UAS-to-manned aircraft), impacts on critical infrastructure, privacy concerns, environmental effects, and incorporate the mitigating role of U-space services. Fast-time simulations in realistic environments demonstrate the operational benefits in terms of capacity, safety, and security.

EASA supports the development of the solution, ensuring alignment with the evolving U-space regulatory framework. The solution also contributes to the work of EUROCAE WG-105 in developing new standards for U-space services and supporting systems.
