CICONIA MET will develop meteorological and climate services for airlines, air navigation service providers and network managers to improve flight safety and efficiency, enhancing mitigation of adverse weather conditions such as convection, icing and turbulence, while reducing aviation’s environmental impact. The services support trajectory optimisation considering weather and climate effects.
The project leverages existing and next-generation aircraft sensors and datalink infrastructure, feeding weather and climate forecast models. Sensor data, enriched with alternative ground measurements, are processed and shared with end users. CICONIA MET will design the service and data architecture, define interfaces, support standardisation, and validate results through lab exercises and flight tests.
Building on prior SESAR projects (i.e. CICONIA, FCDI, PJ.14-W2-110) and standardisation activities (i.e. EUROCAE WG-76 and RTCA SC-206 MET datalink), the consortium includes original equipment manufacturers, avionics and communications suppliers, weather services, research organisations, airlines and air navigation service providers, supported by a stakeholder outreach body to disseminate results.
