This innovative solution aims to revolutionize air traffic control (ATC) in Europe by making it easier for controllers to manage different sectors of airspace. Currently, the process for qualifying for new sectors is complex and time-consuming, limiting controllers' flexibility and creating staffing challenges for air navigation service providers (ANSPs).

The proposed solution tackles these challenges head-on with four key strategies:

Supporting Tools for Controllers: Imagine tools that help controllers adapt to unfamiliar sectors with ease, reducing mental strain and improving efficiency.

Smart Competency Monitoring: A smarter system will predict the required skills needed for different situations allowing more flexible rostering and ensuring that controllers are always up to speed, enhancing overall performance.

Flexible Sector Groupings: Introducing more flexible unit endorsement sector groupings within service units, allowing for smoother transitions and improved rostering.

Common Unit Competence Scheme Framework: Establishing a Europe-wide methodology for currency requirements ensures safety while expanding the endorsed sectors for ATCOs, providing a standardised approach across the continent.

While the specific details are still under development, this project aims to create a standardised approach to air traffic controller competency across Europe. This will streamline the process for controllers to gain qualifications for new sectors and ensure consistent safety regulations throughout the region.

This initiative, known as IFAV-Enroute, is expected to significantly improve cost-efficiency in air navigation services while maintaining airspace capacity. It will also ensure continued safety standards across Europe by establishing a common framework for controller qualifications.
