Currently, a wide range of services and solutions have been developed to support U-space operations. However, many of these have been created independently without sufficient consideration for integration with existing or future U-space services. While the U-space Concept of Operations (ConOps) outlines high-level service capabilities, the practical mechanisms for integrating these services remain insufficiently addressed. This lack of guidance risks leading to fragmented, inefficient, and potentially unsafe drone operations in urban environments.
The Service Integration Guidelines (SIG) aim to fill this critical gap by providing a structured set of guidelines for integrating and coordinating diverse U-space services including Airspace Design Service (0449), Autonomous Flight Plan Approval Service (0450), and Drone Detection and Communication Service (0451) developed in the project and their service dependencies.
This solution introduces a holistic framework that captures the various operational processes, stakeholder roles, and information flows needed to support safe and efficient U-space operations. It reflects the perspectives and requirements of a broad range of U-space actors, including U-space service providers (USSPs), common information service providers (CISPs), drone operators, regulators, and other stakeholders. This solution describes the required or desired expected inputs and outputs, coordination needs using the framework to complete the identified ConOps missions.
While SIG does not aim to create new standards, it will examine existing standards and regulatory frameworks relevant to service integration and data exchange. This includes assessing the applicability of guidelines from recognized bodies such as EASA, ICAO, and others to support consistent and compliant integration approaches.
The expected outcome of SIG is an enhanced level of service interoperability that improves the safety, efficiency, and scalability of drone operations in urban environments. Additionally, SIG can reduce development time and costs by providing a clear pathway for integrating new and existing solutions into the broader U-space ecosystem.
